ACTION: Green Construction Careers Demonstration Program

UPDATE 10-1-09

The draft Senate Climate Bill includes the Construction Career Demonstration Project. Thank you to all of you that helped communicate its importance to your elected officials.

This post was sent on 9-23-09 by Kelly Kupcak, an independent consultant and longtime advocate for women in the trades.

Dear Colleagues, Friends and Advocates:

Please take a moment to contact Senator Sherrod Brown’s office to encourage him to communicate support for the Green Construction Careers Demonstration Program which is a component of the American Clean Energy and Security Act (HR 2454) as this will increase access for marginalized workers on green projects and in high-road union jobs such as retrofitting, weatherization and others.  (Please refer to attached summary by Wider Opportunities for Women for additional information).   The bill goes is scheduled to go before the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee for mark-up next week. It is important for the Senate committee to hear from members of the Senate HELP committee on this issue.

It is critical that the Green Construction Careers Demonstration Program remain in the legislation!

Please contact Chris Slevin at Senator Brown’s office at:  202-224-2315 or email at chris_slevin@brown.senate.gov and ask him to convey to Senator Brown support for this important program and to urge Senator Barbara Boxer and the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee members to support maintaining the Green Construction Careers Demonstration Program in the American Clean Energy and Security bill.

Full text of the bill can be found at http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-2454.  Should you have specific questions on the Green Construction Career Program, please contact Susan Reese, Director of National Policy and Projects at Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW) at srees@wowonline.org or 202-464-1596.

Thank you for your continued efforts in helping create a high-road green economy for Ohio and our nation!

Best regards,

Kelly Kupcak
