Central Ohio Advocacy Coordinator


Join an organization in the center of health care advocacy in Ohio!

UHCAN Ohio (Universal Health Care Action Network of Ohio) is a statewide, nonprofit organization working for high quality, affordable health care for all Ohioans by building strong consumer advocacy. UHCAN Ohio is based in Columbus (with offices in Cleveland and Cincinnati). We are the lead organization for Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage (OCHC), a statewide coalition building a coordinated, diverse consumer voice working for quality, affordable health care for all Ohioans.

We are looking for a person with experience in coalition building, leadership development and grassroots organizing who can build the Central Ohio network of the Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage and work on other health advocacy campaigns as needed.

This is a grant-funded position, and it is possible it will not extend beyond one year.

Duties include:

Central Ohio

  • Build stakeholder relations with key health care constituencies and advocacy organizations by building relationships with their leaders and serving as an OCHC resource to them, reaching out particularly to minority-led organizations and faith-based organizations;
  • Convene monthly meetings of the Central Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage
  • Provide staff support for the Central Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage coalition and build it into a broad network for health care reform that will influence state and local health care policy. The local network will coordinate a series of activities to

o   build leaders among the Central Ohio members

o   educate consumers about critical health reform issues

o   support OCHC’s statewide campaigns in Central Ohio

o   generate earned media through educational events and campaign activities.

  • Work with the OCHC Field Director and Project director to carry out the OCHC issue campaign(s) in Central  Ohio around health care reform

Campaign for Better Care

  • Build relationships with organizations across the state with older American constituencies for the purpose of building the Coalition for Better Care.
  • Staff the Campaign for Better Care, including the convening of and preparation for monthly meetings of the Campaign
  • Other responsibilities, as assigned


  • · 2 or more years experience coordinating coalitions or working groups seeking to impact public policy; experience with health policy, health care issues and the health care delivery system is a plus.
  • · Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to write clearly and effectively for a wide range of audiences, to speak before groups and with legislators, members of the press and the public;
  • · Outstanding organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and manage various complex projects simultaneously;
  • · Ability to interact effectively with a broad range of people;
  • · Some knowledge of the health care system gathered from working in it, studying it, or organizing people around the need for health care
  • · Strong leadership, collaborative and team building skills;
  • · Proficiency in the use of word processing, Internet and e-mail communications.
  • · Commitment to social justice in general and universal health care coverage in particular;
  • · Daily access to reliable automotive transportation and a valid driver’s license to make frequent trips around Southwest Ohio
  • · BA or BS degree or equivalent.
  • · Bilingual language skills a plus.

Salary: Salary range:  $38,000 – $40,000, DOE.  Health coverage is provided, with some contribution by the employee.
