    Since 2007, the Ohio Workforce Coalition has been bringing together leaders from education and training institutions, economic and workforce development organizations, business and industry, labor, and human service providers. The Coalition promotes public policies that build the skills of adult workers, meet employer skill needs, and strengthen the workforce system to ensure opportunity and prosperity for Ohio families.

CRP Staff and OWC Leadership Committee Members Meet with Key State Agency Officials

Last week, CRP staff and several Ohio Workforce Coalition Leadership Committee members met with key state officials to discuss the Coalition platform and get updates on state workforce initiatives. We met with Chancellor Jim Petro and staff from the Ohio Board of Regents Economic Advancement Division; Bruce Madson and John Weber from Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Office of Workforce Development; and Dawn Larzelere, the Governor’s Assistant Policy Director, Economic Development. In these meetings we heard about their strong commitment to adult workforce development and strengthening state workforce systems and policies, as well as the challenges posed by cuts in state and federal funds. We stressed that the Coalition is a resource to provide practical advice on policy and program issues.  They indicated that there will be more clarity about the administration’s workforce initiatives after they get through the budget process and determine the structure of the Ohio Department of Development. In the meantime, we will continue to communicate with state agency staff to advance OWC policy priorities.

Thank You to the OWC Stakeholder Survey Respondents!

A big THANK YOU to the 150 individuals who participated in the OWC Stakeholder Survey. The respondents represent very diverse sectors, including research and advocacy groups, local and state government, educational institutions, labor organizations, community service providers and many more. There was a lot of great feedback and while we are still analyzing the data, here are a couple of early findings.

FEATURED GUEST POST: Integrating basic education with occupational skills training

Goal 1 of the Ohio Workforce Coalition’s 2010-2012 Public Policy Platform is to Reduce Barriers for adults pursuing education and training.  An innovative way to do so, is to contextualize basic education with occupational skills training.  In this guest post by The Center for Law and Social Policy, we learn more about how this strategy works.

An increasing number of new and replacement jobs in the U.S. will require workers to have at least some postsecondary education. Economists report that, in Ohio alone, almost one million of the job vacancies from 2008 to 2018 will be reserved only for those workers with a postsecondary credential.
